Introducing Tom Need...

Efflorescence

For this series of images I have photographed locations that for me evoke a sense of loss and longing, a loss of confidence in the systems that control us, be they financial, political or social.  With disillusionment uncertainty creeps in and all that is left to do is to try and comprehend what remains.

I chose to work in suburban areas that I was familiar with but tried to make these anonymous.  Pedestrian underpasses, motorway bridges, car parks, tower blocks and lock up garages, became the spaces that for me resonated with the feelings of isolation and emptiness that I wanted to evoke. I became intrigued with the very material of these structures, the raw concrete that conjures up ideas related to Brutalist architecture and its ideals of Socialist Utopia.
